Este creciente contexto multicultural, relativamente nuevo para América Latina gracias al papel protagónico que ha venido jugando en los últimos años a nivel internacional, plantea grandes desafíos tanto para las empresas como para cada uno de los individuos que conforman su fuerza laboral. Cada vez son más las multinacionales y empresas latinoamericanas que deciden trasladar sus operaciones globales o regionales a distintos países latinoamericanos y que requieren que sus equipos colaboren y trabajen efectivamente a nivel global, y sobretodo que sean capaces de aprovechar las oportunidades que ofrece este contexto global y multicultural.

Estereotipos: entre el bien y el mal

La subjetividad es tan inherente al ser humano como lo son sus propias emociones. En el alma mezclamos de manera inseparable la voluntad, el intelecto y la emoción; y según cada una de estas “sea alimentada” podremos actuar de una manera u otra. De hecho es por esto tan famosa la llamada Inteligencia Emocional, que no es otra cosa que alimentar el intelecto y la voluntad para controlar las emociones (y que Daniel Goleman me perdone por hacerlo parecer tan simple).

Por nuestro lado, y digo nuestro porque aquí es lo que nos reune, la Inteligencia Cultural (CQ) busca entonces alimentar “el conocimiento” , la “aprehención mental de las diferencias” y modelar el “comportamiento” entre las culturas.  Obviamente el comportamiento se nutre de nuestras emociones y por ende de alguna manera querámoslo o no se relaciona con nuestra subjetividad.

Sin embargo, como si fuera parte de un círculo vicioso nuestra subjetividad cambia según alimentemos el conocimiento y nos dispongamos a aprender y aprehender. Sí hay que conocer y disponerse a conocer, además de buscar fuentes de información diversas… variadas y paradójicamente, objetivas.

Los estereotipos sin duda alguna son uno de los principales desafíos en nuestra interacción intercultural. Para algunos es el bien… la bendición y el llevar consigo ese pre-juicio (pre: adelantado…inferido…establecido… no cuestionado) que les abre puertas y que les da acceso a una serie de oportunidades negadas para otros.

Ejemplos de esto hay muchos. Podríamos comenzar por las diferencias de género y por ende los pre-juicios alrededor de hombres y mujeres para el desempeño de oficios y responsabilidades. Aún es una realidad latente que hombres y mujeres no recibimos la misma remuneración al realizar/ejecutar la misma tarea y ocupando la misma posición.

Nelson Mandela es tristemente célebre por luchar contra el Apartheid y entregar su vida por demostrar que el color de la piel no interfiere con lo que somos o podemos ofrecer. Los prejuicios sociales se dramatizan entre el amarillismo y el realismo trágico en miles de tragicomedias y novelas reflejando una sociedad estereotipada.  No hay que dar muchos detalles de lo que significa tener un nombre de ascendencia árabe y musulmán en los Estados Unidos luego del 9/11.

Y así hay otras tantas, como la que vivo cuando me discriminan por el lugar donde nací. Entonces los estereotipos se convierten en una especie de estigma, de etiqueta, de prejuicio sin sentido y sin razón. Aunque parezca irreal cuando vivía en Londres a una compañera del college le prohibieron hablar conmigo “peligro es colombiana” y en 1998 buscando un lugar para vivir, llegué a uno de los suburbios a una casa donde lo primero que me dijeron: es usted familiar de Pablo Escobar?

Al final no importa lo bueno que cualquiera nacido en este país pueda tener. Lo malo es la nube negra que nos acompaña, nos limita, nos cierra puertas y lo peor, muchas veces tristemente habla por nosotros y enmudece nuestra voz.

Hay problemas, tal vez más que en otras latitudes… tal vez menos y más publicitadas. Los estereotipos se vuelven peligrosamente en contra de todos, y nos llevan al facilismo de generalizar y el derecho sesgado del absolutismo puro. TODOS los nacidos son, o TODOS los hombres, TODOS los musulmanes, TODOS…. y no! No todos ni todas somos iguales, si bien es cierto tenemos rasgos y características compartidas, el absolutismo es negarnos la posibilidad de nuestro valor como individuos… lo que somos más allá de lo que otros dicen que somos o debemos ser.

Stereotypes: Between Good and Evil

Subjectivity is as inherent to humans as are our emotions. In our souls we inextricably mix intellect and emotion, and we behave in one way or another depending on which one we feed. That which is famously called “Emotional Intelligence” (EQ) is, in truth, nothing more than feeding the intellect and controlling emotions (forgive me, Daniel Goleman, for making it seem so simple).

In our field, and I say “our” because it is what brings us together, Cultural Intelligence (CQ) seeks to feed “knowledge,” “mental appreciation of differences,” and to model “behavior” across cultures. Obviously behavior is influenced by our emotions and therefore, like it or not, it relates to our subjectivity.

However, as if it were part of a vicious cycle, our subjectivity changes according to how we nourish knowledge, and we can become better able to learn and comprehend. Yes, it’s necessary to know and to be ready to learn, to search for diverse sources of information — varied and, paradoxically, objective.

Stereotypes without any doubt are one of the major challenges in intercultural interaction. For some it’s the good; the blessing to take with them prejudice (established assumptions and inferences that are not questioned) that opens doors and gives them access to a series of opportunities denied to others.

There are many examples of this. We could start with gender differences and the prejudices surrounding men and women’s abilities to perform jobs and responsibilities. We live with the reality that men and women still do not receive equal pay for equal work or when occupying the same position.

Nelson Mandela is sadly famous for fighting Apartheid and devoting his life to demonstrating that the color of one’s skin does not interfere with who we are or what we have to offer. Social prejudices are dramatized between sensationalism and tragic realism in thousands of tragi-comedies and novels representing a stereotyped society. There is little need to give details surrounding what it means to be a Muslim man of Arab descent in the USA after 9/11.

And there are many more, like those I live with when people discriminate against me due to where I was born. The stereotypes become a type of stigma, a label, of mindless and irrational prejudice. Although it seems surreal, when I lived in London a college friend was prohibited from talking with me because I was “the Colombian danger,” and in 1998 when I was looking for a place to live, I arrived at a suburban house where the first thing they asked me was, “Are you related to Pablo Escobar?”

In the end, it doesn’t matter how good anyone born in this country might be. The evil is the black cloud that accompanies us, limits us, closes doors for us, and worse, that many times sadly speaks for us and mutes our voice.

We in Colombia have problems, perhaps more than in other locations; perhaps fewer but more publicized. Stereotypes come dangerously back against all of us, and they easily take us to generalizations and pure, biased absolutism. ALL OF US are born, ALL OF US are human, ALL OF US are Muslim, ALL … and not!

Not all of us are equal, even though we may share certain traits and characteristics. Absolutism negates the possibility of our value as individuals — it negates who we are, beyond that which others say we are or should be.

Al ritmo de cadera

Latinoamérica es sin duda sinónimo de ritmos y movimientos. Las cadencias que se mezclan en esta tierra son reconocidas en el mundo entero. Los ritmos tropicales como la cumbia, el merengue, la salsa y la bachata están presentes en cada discoteca que se pueda imaginar. O, cantantes de moda como el colombiano Juanes y su canción La Camisa Negra,  la cual internacionalizó la música de carrilera de nuestra región andina y la vine a escuchar en su versión original en un sitio nocturno en las afueras de Atenas hace unos años. Yo veía estas rubias tan hermosas tararear “tengo la camisa negra” y decía Dios mío ¿sabrán lo que están bailando?

Y la música da para todo, aún para seguirme sorprendiendo. Acostumbro a ver las actualizaciones de estado de mis contactos en BlackBerry messenger, uno de esos estados decía: Interesados en clase de Zumba, favor contactarme.

Hasta ahí no hay nada especial, lo sé, pero mi contacto es de Mumbai y está a muchos kilómetros de distancia del origen de Zumba. Era justamente Happy Holi para ellos, fiesta de color, así que saludé a Krishna y le dije cuán soprendida estaba con su invitación a Zumba. Ella no sabía que este nuevo ritmo que se ha tomado casi todos gimnasios del mundo – y no exagero – había nacido en Colombia, por cierto que me dijo: Querida si estuvieras en India ¡podríamos ir juntas!. ¿Cuándo imaginaría su creador estar también en los gimasios de la India?

Yo no he tomado mi primera clase de Zumba y supe de esto por una entrevista radial. Me encantó escuchar la historia de su creador, quien en busca de oportunidades se metió de profesor de aeróbicos, los cuales fueron furor en los años 90 por esa moda del buen estado físico que nos llegó de Estados Unidos. Este joven profesor un día cualquiera en su natal Cali, Valle del Cauca (Colombia) no encontró su cassette para una clase y tuvo que ese día recurrir a lo suyo para remplazar el rock y demás que eran el “must” y, con salsa y ritmos latinos hizo sudar a más de una sin darse cuenta que ahí comenzaba el giro de 360 grados en su vida.

No soy muy nacionalista, o por lo menos eso creo, pero cuando Krishna citaba a todos sus amigos a tomar clases me dije, le tengo que contar que eso es de aquí.

Acabo de visitar la web http://www.zumba.com/ y me gozo mirando que hay nueve opciones idiomáticas, que hacen diferencia entre portugués de Brasil o Portugal, y lo propio con el español de México.

Sí, la música es universal y nuestro sabor tropical parece que también lo es, sin embargo este profesor de aeróbicos logró junto con sus socios crear una firma global. Hoy está radicado en Estados Unidos y tienen desde DVDs hasta ropa y programas de certificación. Una buena idea, un buen socio y una excelente aproximación intercultural hace que Zumba sea para todo el que esté dispuesto a disfrutar.

To the Rhythm of the Hips

Latin America is without doubt synonymous with rhythms and moves. The mix of cadences in this land are known throughout the world. The tropical rhythms such as cumbia, merengue, salsa and bachata are found in every dance club imaginable. Popular singers such as the Colombian Juanes and his song La Camisa Negra internationalized the carrilera music of our Andean region; I even heard the original version in a nightclub on the outskirts of Athens some years ago. I saw those beautiful blondes humming “I have a black shirt” and I said to myself, “My God, do they know what they are dancing to?”

The music gives to all, even as it keeps surprising me. I regularly check the status updates of my contacts in BlackBerry Messenger, and recently one of them said: “Interested in a Zumba class? Please contact me.”

Up to that point there is nothing special, I know, but my contact is in Mumbai, quite a few kilometers’ distance from the origin of Zumba. It was just Happy Holi for them, the festival of colors, so I gave Krishna my regards and told her how surprised I was with her invitation to Zumba. She didn’t know that this new rhythm that had taken over almost every gymnasium in the world — without exaggeration — had been born in Colombia. She told me, “My dear, if you were in India we could go together!” I’ll bet that Zumba’s creator never imagined that it would be in gymnasiums in India!

I have not taken my first Zumba class, and I learned about it via a radio interview. I was fascinated to hear the history of its creator who, looking for personal development opportunities became an aerobics teacher, which was the fitness rage in the 90s that arrived from the United States. This young teacher, one normal day in his birthplace of Cali, Valle del Cauca (Colombia), couldn’t find the cassette with the required rock music for his class that day. So he had to rely on his own salsa and Latin rhythms that made everyone sweat, and which turned his life around 360 degrees without his even realizing it.

I am not very nationalistic, or at least I don’t think I am, but when Krishna told all his friends to take classes I told myself, “I must tell him that it’s from here.”

I just visited the webpage http://www.zumba.com and enjoyed seeing that there are nine language choices, that they differentiate between the Portuguese of Brasil and Portugal, and Castillian with the Spanish of Mexico.

Yes, music is universal and it would seem that our tropical tastes are as well. And this aerobics instructor, together with his partners, was able to create a global firm. Today he lives in the USA and they have everything from DVDS to a clothing line and certification programs. A good idea, a good partner, and an excellent intercultural approach have made Zumba available to everyone who is willing to enjoy it.

Cómo perder su puntualidad en quince días

Estas fiestas de fin de año me han dejado la nostalgia de los ausentes a quienes no pude abrazar con el anhelo del reencuentro. En contraste, me han dado la oportunidad de gozarme lo simple de nuestras tradiciones más sentidas. Una de ellas sin duda para mí es la cocina. Debo confesar soy de las que cocina escuchando música de diciembre, desde villancicos como tutaina o mi burrito sabanero, hasta los infaltables temas de la Billos Caraca’s Boys, Los Melódicos o Los Hispanos. Crecí con esta música y a falta de estaciones, en Colombia es Navidad desde que las emisoras comienzan a emitir estas melodías y las vitrinas de tiendas presentan sus decoraciones. El gran inicio es nuestra fiesta de las velitas el 7 de diciembre, cuando todos los alumbrados oficialmente se encienden y  las casas se visten de luz con velas de colores y faroles que se extinguen al amanecer. Es nuestra fiesta de luz.

El ritmo cambia y el tiempo se hace aún más amigo. Contrasta el agite de las calles y sus trancones — embotellamientos — con el ritmo al que se llevan muchas tareas. Esta singular amistad con el tiempo se torna evidente para quienes nos visitan.

Tuvimos con mi familia la gran oportunidad de acoger a quienes estaban solos de paso por nuestra ciudad. Para Navidad, nuestra invitada de California se ganó la membresía en el club de los “gringos chéveres”. La citamos a las 10:00pm, llegó a las 10:15pm pues el taxista la buscó un poco más tarde en el hotel. Brindamos, cenamos y mis padres sin hablar más que yes or hello, le transmitieron nuestras tradiciones — bueno sí, mis hermanos y yo asistimos en la traducción — pero las sonrisas y la música son parte de un idioma universal.  La despedimos de madrugada el 25, luego de tres días en Bogotá se preparaba a disfrutar San Andrés y Cartagena. Su periplo apenas comenzaba.

Para fin de año, nuestros invitados esta vez fueron de Alemania y Francia. Los dos invitados de Alemania ya llevan varias semanas en el país. Su periplo ya los había llevado por Cartagena, la zona cafetera, Boyacá y alrededores del Cañón del Chicamocha. En resumen, se han recorrido casi la mitad del país. La cita a cenar era la misma 10:00pm, y mi razonamiento fue, como son alemanes les decimos a las 10:00pm para que cenemos juntos.

Pasaron las 10:15pm, las 10:30pm y nada. Estos invitados se hicieron amigos del tiempo. Llegaron unos 50min tarde luego de varias llamadas al celular disponible. Uno llega a preocuparse si fue que se perdieron o pararon en la cena equivocada. Cuando llegaron ya habíamos iniciado, simplemente pensamos algo se presentó y no iban a venir, !son alemanes! Llegaron, cenaron, brindamos… y hasta bailamos. Uno de ellos ha dicho que es la mejor Nochevieja de su vida.  Los tres hablan español muy bien, así que pudieron compartir sus experiencias con todos en casa, y fue así como pidieron mil excusas pues en uno de sus recorridos un simpático colombiano los citó “en diez minutos” que se volvieron tal vez cuatro horas.

Su lógica fue, nos dicen a las 10:00pm así que podemos llegar tarde. Al final les dije de este blog y que les contaría a todos como se puede perder la puntualidad en quince días de paso por Colombia. Ahora uno de ellos está de regreso en Alemania, y un alemán y un francés amigos del tiempo están en las playas de San Andrés.

Mis padres han sido los más alegres con estas visitas. Poco saben de sociedades policrónicas o monocrónicas, de alto o bajo contexto, ni tienen idea que el trabajo de Cultural Detective le muestra al mundo que el tiempo es un amigo en este país. Sin embargo ellos saben lo que nos hace auténticos y algo que siempre han enseñado en casa es el valor de querer lo nuestro, nuestras tradiciones y lo que somos — por supuesto, abiertos a aprender de los demás. Mis padres fueron sin duda los grandes anfitriones, hasta mi madre sacó a bailar a uno de los chicos y dió clases de música tropical. Sin duda para todos unas fiestas inolvidables. Como diría mi padre “my home is your home, welcome”.

How to Lose Your Punctuality in 15 Days, Written by Maryori Vivas

These end-of-the-year holidays have filled me with nostalgia for those I am unable to hug despite the desire for a reunion. In contrast, they have given me the opportunity to enjoy the simplicity of some of our deepest traditions. One of these for me is without doubt that of the kitchen. I must confess that I am one of those who cooks while listening to holiday music, everything from carols such as Tutaina or Mi Burrito Sabanero, to infallible tunes such as those of the Billos Caracas Boys, Los Melódicos, or Los Hispanos. I grew up with this music; in Colombia Christmas begins when the radio stations start playing such melodies and the shop windows display their holiday decorations. The great beginning of the festivities is the Festival of Lights on December 7th, when holiday lights are officially turned on and the houses are filled with the light of colorful candles and lanterns that aren’t turned off until dawn. This is our Festival of Lights.

The rhythm changes at this time of year, and time becomes even more of a friend than usual. Contrast the excitement of the streets and their traffic jams — traffic stops really — with the rhythm with which we complete the many tasks of the season. This unique friendship with time gradually becomes evident to our guests.

Our family had the wonderful opportunity this year of welcoming into our home those who were traveling alone in our city. For Christmas, our guest from California won membership in the “cool gringos” club. We invited her for 10 pm. She arrived at 10:15, because the taxi had picked her up late at her hotel. We toasted, dined, and my parents, who can’t speak more than “yes” or “hello” in English, communicated our traditions to her — ok, my sister, my brother and I assisted with the translation — but smiles and music are universal languages. We bade her goodbye at dawn on the 25th. After three days in Bogotá she was preparing to enjoy San Andrés and Cartagena. Her journey was just beginning.

On New Year’s Eve, this time our guests were from Germany and France. Our two guests from Germany had already been in our country for several weeks. Their journey had already taken them to Cartagena, the coffee region, Boyacá and the area around the Canyon of Chicamocha. They had travelled over half the country. I told them the same 10 pm for dinner, and my reasoning was that as they are Germans they’d arrive right around 10 pm so we could dine together.

10:15 pm passed, 10:30 pm, and nothing. Our guests had become friends with time. They arrived about 50 minutes later, after various cell phone calls. One starts to worry whether guests have gotten lost or have ended up at the wrong dinner. When they arrived we had already begun, simply imagining that something had come up and they weren’t going to be able to come. After all, they’re German. But they arrived, we ate, we toasted, and we even danced. One of them told us it was the best New Year’s Eve of his life.

All three speak Spanish very well, so they were able to share their experiences with everyone in the house. It was in this way that they asked a thousand pardons for their late arrival, explaining that in one of their travels a kind Colombian had told them “in ten minutes,” which had turned into perhaps four hours. Their logic had been that we’d told them 10 pm, so they could arrive late. In the end I told them about this blog, and that I would tell everyone the story about how to lose punctuality in 15 days of travel in Colombia. Now one of them is back in Germany, and the other German and the French friends of time are enjoying the beaches of San Andrés.

My parents have been the happiest with these visits. They know little about polychronic or monochronic societies, of high or low context, and they have no idea that the work of the Cultural Detective demonstrates to the world that time is a friend in our country. However, they know what makes us authentic and what has always been taught at home: the value of loving what’s ours, our traditions and who we are — of course with an openness to learning about others. My parents were without doubt wonderful hosts; my mother even got one of the young men to dance with her and gave a class on tropical music. These were definitely holidays to remember. As my father would say, “my home is your home; welcome!”

El candidato ideal

En un mundo cada vez más interconectado y globalizado, las asignaciones internacionales suelen ser más frecuentes para empleados de empresas multinacionales. Dado lo anterior las empresas han dispuesto de grandes esfuerzos y recursos para optimizar su selección del candidato ideal para las vacantes que surjan y poder iniciar el proceso de expatriación (traslado laboral a otro país con beneficios para el empleado y su familia).

Los llamados departamentos de personal o recursos humanos han alineado sus procesos de reclutamiento y selección con el fin de optimizar la búsqueda y el tan ahnelado hallazgo de quien cumple con los requisitos del cargo y adicionalmente sea capaz adaptarse a un entorno que puede ser similar y muy distante del actual.

A priori se consideran el dominio de los idiomas o experiencias previas en otros países y culturas, lo que podríamos denominar un bagaje intercultural. Sin embargo esto no siempre resulta, ni para la empresa ni para el expatriado.

Conozco dos casos contrastantes de primera mano. Los dos llegaron aquí a Bogotá, de dos países diferentes y para dos asignaciones igualmente diferentes.

El primero venía de Europa, de uno de esos países con cultura monosincrónica, bastante rígido con el tiempo y de los que la puntualidad es un tema que no tiene discusión. Había vivido en Estados Unidos y varios lugares de Europa, incluyendo España por lo cual domina el castellano (con el ceceo que decimos los latinos, yo digo que los españoles hablan siempre con ortografía), soltero, sin hijos y sin pareja. Cambiaba de industria, pero su trabajo vincularía a partir del área comercial su país natal y Colombia como puerta de entrada a América Latina. Llegó con lo que los locales consideramos un muy buen salario, un apartamento en una zona lujosa de la ciudad (cerca a su nueva oficina) y todo el apoyo de su empresa para comenzar una nueva sucursal en mi país. Su tiempo estimado de dos a tres años inicialmente.

Por otro lado, tenemos a un hombre que venía de Israel sin hablar una sílaba de español, casado (llegó con dos hijos, hoy ya tiene tres ) quien vino por una asignación puntual de seis meses. Llegó solo y solamente a dirigir un proyecto de infraestructura en la ciudad. Se enfrentó a dirigir cien operarios y, si podemos decir, a golpes comprender por qué la cerveza es parte del presupuesto de muchas familias de estos empleados a su cargo. Tuvo que lidiar temas familiares, de rendimiento del trabajo individual y de grupo. Aprendió de primera fuente cómo era la contratación pública en Colombia.

Dos escenarios totalmente opuestos y con resultados igualmente contrastantes.

El primero a pesar de su buena voluntad, su dominio del idioma… no logró adaptarse a nuestro entorno, cultura e impuntualidad. Cuando hablaba con él recordaba mi propia vivencia cuando en el Caribe me era tan complicado sentirme fluir. Tuve amigos, pasé momentos muy especiales… pero siempre había algo que me decía, no es tu lugar. En fin, así le pasó a este ejecutivo que no completó el primer año de contrato y se regresó a su país. La última vez que nos comunicamos estaba de paso en Singapur, volvió a su anterior industria y por Facebook me entero de sus movimientos alrededor del planeta (Australia, Alemania, Francia, Estados Unidos…) no ha regresado a Colombia, espero que nos podamos volver a encontrar y disfrutar una buena copa juntos.

El segundo ya habla muy bien español, lleva siete años en el país y ahora ha fundado su propia empresa con talento en un 90% colombiano. Su familia vive con él, y su hijo menor nació aquí. A pesar de tantas diferencias entre su cultura y la nuestra, aprendió a nadar en nuestro rio y podría afirmar que se mueve como pez en el agua. Se proyecta como representante de varias empresas de su país en América Latina, y como dijo uno de nuestros políticos alguna vez… es como si dijera “aquí estoy y aquí me quedo”.

A primera vista el primero de los candidatos se perfilaba como el candidato ideal para quedarse (conozco por cierto muchos solteros que llegan, se casan y se quedan en mi país gracias a la buena fama de las mujeres), pero no fue así y el que parecía que no se quedaría más allá de su asignación regresó a su país por su familia para traerla consigo y quedarse indefinidamente.

No dudo que los departamentos de personal o recursos humanos asociados a cada uno de estos casos y sus esferzos de “relocation” fueron minuciosos, estudiados y abordados con profunda seriedad y profesionalismo. Pienso que a veces, el paso adicional nos corresponde a los que aplicamos y ser muy honestos con nosotros mismos y en la evaluación previa de las nuevas condiciones de vida.

Nuestro desafío desde el punto de vista intercultural es brindar las herramientas adicionales que permitan tomar la decisión más acertada según las condiciones disponibles y hacer el acompañamiento de entrenamiento para su nuevo destino desde el punto de vista de la vida diaria, cultura de negocios, la vida para el empleado y su familia, entre muchos otros.

Debemos entender que no es ni bueno ni malo sentirnos o no a gusto en otro lugar (país, región, entorno). Sin embargo sí debemos conocer lo que más nos impacta (a nosotros y cuando aplique nuestras familias) y por ende identificar en qué lugar nos podemos trasladar para cumplir con el trabajo y además llevar una vida a gusto con nuestra familia.

The Ideal Candidate

In a world that is increasingly interconnected and globalized, international assignments seem ever more frequent for employees of multinational companies. Given the above, firms have invested great efforts and resources to optimize their selection of ideal candidates to fill job vacancies and to be able to initiate the expatriation process (job transfer to another country with benefits for the employee and family).

Personnel and human resource departments have aligned their recruitment and selection processes to optimize the search for those who meet the requirements of the position and who are also capable of adapting to an environment that can be at the same time very similar and very different from their home environment.

It’s considered logical that a successful candidate would have mastery of the new language or previous experience living abroad, but that is not always the case.

I have firsthand knowledge of two contrasting cases. Both transferees arrived here in Bogotá from different countries and for two very different job assignments.

The first person came from Europe, from one of those countries with a monochronic culture, fairly rigid about time, with the belief that punctuality is not a matter for debate. He had lived in North America and various places around Europe, including Spain, and for that reason spoke Castilian well (with the lisp about which Latinos say, “Spaniards always speak with good spelling”). He was single, had no children and no partner. He had changed industries, and his new job involved commercially linking his birth country with Colombia as a gateway to Latin America. The position came with what locals would consider a very good salary, an apartment in an upscale area of the city (near his new office), and the full support of the company to start a new branch in my country. His assignment was estimated to be two to three years, initially.

The contrasting case was a man from Israel, who arrived without speaking even a syllable of Spanish, married (when he arrived he had two children, and today has three), who came for a short-term, six-month assignment. He arrived alone with the single objective of directing an infrastructure project in the city. He needed to manage one hundred operators and, if I might say so, via the school of hard knocks he learned to understand why beer is part of the family budgets of so many of those he supervised. He was thrown into managing employee family issues, individual performance issues, as well as group dynamics. He learned firsthand about public contracting in Colombia.

These were two scenarios that were totally opposite and with results that were equally different.

The first gentleman, despite his goodwill and language skills, failed to adapt himself to our environment, the culture and the tardiness. When I spoke with him I was reminded of my own experience living in the Caribbean, where I found it so complicated to get in the flow of things. I had friends, I had some very special moments, but always there was something telling me, “this is not your place.” In the end, what happened is that this executive returned home before even completing the first year of his multi-year contract. The last time I was in touch with him he was passing through Singapore. He had returned to the previous industry in which he had worked, and I found out via Facebook about his travels all over the world (Australia, Germany, France, USA). He has not returned to Colombia, though I hope we can meet up again some day and enjoy a good drink together.

The second gentleman now speaks Spanish very well. He has spent seven years in country and has now founded his own company with 90% Colombian talent. His family lives with him, and his youngest son was born here. Despite so many differences between his culture and ours, he learned to swim in our river and I can affirm that he moves here like a fish in water. He acts as a Latin American representative for several companies from his country, and as one of our politicians once said, it’s as if he said, “I am here and here I’ll remain.”

At initial glance the first candidate seemed to have the ideal profile for a long-term stay (I definitely know many bachelors who arrive, marry and stay in my country thanks to the good fame of our women), but it was not to be. The one who it would have seemed would not remain beyond a short initial assignment ended up returning to his country to collect his family and bring them back with him to stay here indefinitely.

I have no doubt that the personnel and human resource departments associated with each of these cases engaged in thorough and studied relocation efforts, discussing them with deep seriousness and professionalism. I think that at times, however, the extra step needed is for those of us who apply for overseas assignment to be very honest with ourselves about our life conditions, needs and desires.

Our challenge from an intercultural perspective is to provide additional tools that allow people to make the right decisions according to current realities, and to accompany that with training on daily life, business culture, and personal and social life for the employee and family in the new destination.

We must understand that feeling at home or not in another place (country, region, environment) is not in and of itself good or bad. The key is that we need to know ourselves and our families, what most affects us, and thus be able to discern where we can move in order to conduct our work and maintain a comfortable life with our families.

 

Un Gringo Chévere! A Cool Gringo!

Con el permiso de nuestros lectores gringos, este espacio se lo quiero dedicar a uno en especial. Quiero hablar de un gringo chévere con el que he tenido oportunidad de trabajar para un proyecto de inversión en Colombia. Y quiero resaltar más lo chévere que lo gringo, que dicho sea de paso él no considera ofensivo desde ningún punto de vista.

En mi país un gringo es un forastero que habla enredado. No importa si habla sueco, alemán, italiano, inglés u holandés. Un rubio (o castaño claro) de tez más clara que nuestro promedio, es gringo. Y no lo hacemos por ofender, sino tal vez porque eso quedó en el imaginario colectivo como un sinónimo de “no es de aquí”.

Este gringo chévere vivió veintiún años fuera de su país entre Suráfrica, Bahreim, Francia, Reino Unido y China. Ha dado la vuelta al mundo más de seis veces y, aunque siempre vinculado al sector financiero, ha podido trabajar en diferentes industrias que le dan un vasto conocimiento en muchos temas. Departir con él es sumamente enriquecedor.

Trabajar con este gringo es desafiante. Le admiro sus habilidades y conocimientos en el área financiera, pero él sabe que lo que más admiro es su gran capacidad de entender a los otros, de buscar similitudes y no diferencias, de centrarse en el modo de integrar las partes que se involucran en una negociación y de ver con ojos interculturales su entorno. Es un gran conciliador y excelente negociador. Además posee una gran habilidad para poner en contexto cultural las partes involucradas, casi siempre logra identificar la manera como piensa el otro.

Yo siempre le he dicho, que de lejos me parece el más intercultural de los estadounidenses con los que he trabajado. Tiene una mente global y una carrera profesional que le ha permitido desde cargos directivos confirmar que herramientas gerenciales sin aprehensión cultural no permiten un liderazgo efectivo. La satisfacción de los clientes o la motivación de los empleados se ven impactados directamente por sus expectativas y necesidades, y todos no necesitamos lo mismo.  Cuando comparte muchas de sus experiencias puedo transportarme a muchos escenarios en diferentes latitudes, y logra describir personas y entornos tan diversos sin caer en estereotipos ni prejuicios. Por supuesto que hay situaciones que agradan más que otras, pero es parte de nuestra interacción con cada entorno. Algunos sencillamente nos son más favorables.

Se ganó el título de chévere porque siempre está dispuesto a aprender, no critica sino pregunta, analiza y compara. Este gringo le da la importancia debida al entendimiento de un lugar, una cultura, un pueblo.  Es el que una vez cerrando un negocio en Medio Oriente tuvo que comer ojos de camello y aquí prueba las obleas, las almojábanas y queda encantado con las pitahayas, tanto que llega a buscarlas en su ciudad de residencia, las encuentra en el mercado chino, descubre que su sabor es muy diferente al colombiano y decide ¡comerlas con sal! Jamás he comido pitahaya con sal, aquí son muy dulces…pero esa es la interculturalidad, este gringo es del sur y dice allí comen con sal la sandía y el melón.  Cómo se dan cuenta, es un poco de cada lugar, un poco de aquí y de allá.

A veces centramos nuestros entrenamientos interculturales en aprender teorías y conocer de autores que nos han clasificado de una manera u otra. A veces nos dejamos llevar por la ilusión de pretender cambiar los seres humanos con un discurso y dejamos de lado lo simple, lo básico, como lo es el hecho que ser interculturales comienza en esa disposición misma de aceptar y reconocer.

Aceptar que somos diferentes. Reconocer que pensamos y actuamos diferente a partir del entorno que nos rodea, y de lo que nos ha sido heredado — valores, creencias, etc. Al aceptar y reconocer, se nos hacen fácilmente evidentes también los dilemas a los que nos enfrentamos en medio de las diferencias y que ponen a prueba nuestras habilidades a nivel interpersonal, empresarial y social. Al poner nuestras habilidades a favor de nuestra interacción con nuestro entorno – corporativo, social – podremos construir enlaces y puentes de entendimiento que nos permitan entonces entendernos a nosotros mismos y de esta manera entender a los demás.

Gracias gringo chévere, por permitirme trabajar contigo y aprender tantas cosas a la vez. Gracias por compartir tus aventuras en cada rincón del planeta y tus experiencias laborales y de vida con gente tan diversa. Gracias por permitirme presentarte un poco de mi país, de lo que somos y lo que brindamos.

With the permission of our gringo readers, I’d like to dedicate this space to one in particular. I’d like to talk about a cool gringo I had the opportunity to work with on an investment project in Colombia. And I’d like to emphasize that this cool gringo does not consider the term offensive in any way.

In my country a gringo is an outsider who talks weird. It doesn’t matter if he’s Swedish, German, Italian, English or Dutch. Someone who is blonde or has a lighter complexion than our average is gringo. We don’t say it to offend, but rather because that term has entered our collective imagination as a synonym for “not from here.”

The cool gringo of whom I’m writing lived 21 years outside his country, in South Africa, Bahrain, France, the UK and China. He’s been around the world more than six times, and while he’s always worked in the financial sector, he has been able to work in different industries that have provided him a vast knowledge of diverse subjects. To spend time with him is extremely enriching. He possesses a great ability to put things in cultural context, and is almost always able to identify how the other person thinks.

I have always said that he is by far the most intercultural of the US Americans I’ve worked with. He has a global mind and a professional career that have permitted him to ascertain which management tools permit effective leadership only when used with cultural appropriateness. Customer satisfaction and employee motivation are directly impacted by their expectations and needs; we don’t all need the same thing. When he shares his experiences I’m transported to many scenes in different latitudes, and he is able to describe diverse people and environments without falling into stereotypes or prejudices. Some situations are of course more appealing than others, as it depends on our interaction in each environment. Some situations are simply more favorable.

To work with this gringo is challenging. I admire his abilities and his knowledge in the area of finance, but he knows that what I most admire is his great capacity to understand others, to look for similarities and not differences, to focus on how to integrate the parties involved in a negotiation and watch the context with intercultural eyes. He is a great mediator and excellent negotiator.

He achieved the “cool” title because he is always ready to learn, not to critique but to ask, analyze, and compare. This gringo gives due importance to the understanding of place, culture, and people. He’s the type that, closing a negotiation in the Middle East, had to eat camel’s eyes. Here in Colombia he tried obleas (wafers), almojábanas (crullers), and was delighted with pitahayas (dragon fruit), even going so far as to try to find some where he lives. He finally found them in a Chinese market, but found they tasted very different from the Colombian variety, so he decided to eat them with salt! I’ve never eaten dragon fruit with salt; here they are very sweet. But there’s something about interculturalism. This gringo is from the southern US, where he says they eat watermelon and cantaloupe with salt. As you’ve no doubt noticed, he is a bit of every place he has lived, a bit from here and a bit from there.

At times we focused our intercultural training on learning theory and getting to know authors who have classified us in one manner or another. Sometimes we got carried away with the illusion of trying to change human beings via our conversation, ignoring the basic, simple fact that intercultural beings begin with a predisposition to acceptance and acknowledgement.

To accept that we are different. To acknowledge that we think and act differently depending on the context and on what we’ve inherited — values, beliefs, etc. Accepting and acknowledging make readily apparent the dilemmas we face in the midst of our differences, those that challenge our skills on interpersonal, organizational and social levels. By behaving appropriately to the corporate or social situation we can build links and bridges of understanding that then permit us to understand ourselves and, in this way, to better understand others.

Thank you, cool gringo, for enabling me to work with you and to learn so many things at once. Thank you for sharing your adventures in each corner of our planet, your work and life experiences with such diverse people. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain a bit about my country, about who we are, about what we provide.

Sample Half Day Global Competitiveness Program Design

Many of us have found ourselves in the difficult situation in which people ask us to equip others to be cross-culturally effective and globally competitive – and then give us just a few short hours to do so.

Such was my task recently in Bogotá. The Colombian government had just signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the USA, and I had been invited to work with a lawyer and a business consultant, so that the three of us could, in five hours (ok, we started a bit later than scheduled, so really 4-1/2 hours), better enable local businesses to make the most of this new opportunity. My colleagues were excellent, and thanks to terrific teamwork and generous sharing of expertise, we were able to take a very diverse group of enthusiastic participants a long way in a short time.

I thought some of you might find the design useful for adapting to your own needs.

Session Title: Global Competitiveness and Productivity

Advertised Session Objectives: Learn how to make the most of the new FTA, how to conduct business at international levels of quality and competitiveness, and how to negotiate effectively with US Americans.

OUR DESIGN

Legal Aspects of the FTA – one hour

First, a very talented international lawyer, Andrés Forero, based in Bogotá, walked us through the various aspects of the new FTA, including a summary of the opportunities it presents for Colombian businesses. This was a most interesting session; Andrés knows the FTA inside and out, and he knows Colombian business. He took the complex and made it practical and understandable. He motivated those in attendance by explaining about the huge opportunities. And he also scared us a bit, telling tales of cross-cultural failures that he’d witnessed. Of added interest was the fact that he had been involved in translating the text of the FTA into English, and showed the full two volumes to the public for the first time ever.

Negotiating with US Americans – 2 hours

The extremely talented business consultant with whom I was working, Ing. Fernando Parrado, and I decided that we needed to just “jump in” with this group and immerse them in a case study of a typical Colombian-US negotiation. So we did. We told the story, and we debriefed it using the Cultural Detective (CD) Worksheet. This took about 45 minutes.

Once we had the Worksheet completed, we urged the participants to reflect on what they had done. They saw two different world views, two different approaches, both “correct” and both with value. They saw connections between actions and values, and that values and beliefs motivate behavior. And they saw that really effective strategies use the resources provided by all parties. This took another 10 minutes.

From there we introduced the three intercultural capacities on which Cultural Detective is premised (subjective culture, cultural literacy, cultural bridge), and then reviewed instructions for using the CD Worksheet/the CD Method properly. This took another 15 minutes or so.

Focusing on the US American values section of the now completed Worksheet, we began talking about what is important to US Americans. We defined the concept of culture, cultural diversity, and cultures such as regional, ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, and generational. We made sure participants understood that when we generalize we want to talk about central tendencies of a group of people. We don’t want to stereotype, to “box” an individual into the central tendency of the group.

Then we introduced the concept of a Values Lens: that there are core values or central tendencies of a group of people. And that for each value there is a negative perception, that is, a way in which it can be viewed negatively by those who do not share the value or its expression. I told the participants, as I always do, about the danger of the Values Lenses. I cautioned them not to use them as yet another box into which to fit people, but rather as a tool for discovery, as clues for analysis. The values might apply to the situation, or they might not; they are a guide, a place to start.

These last two items took another ten minutes. It was quick. We covered a lot of territory in a short amount of time.

From here we introduced the US American Values Lens, sharing sample behaviors for each value, and sample negative perceptions. We asked participants if the Values Lens provided them any further clues to understanding the behavior of the US American in the case study, and indeed it did. Participants shared their stories of working with US Americans, and we were all able to learn from one another. This part took about 30 minutes.

Then we took a short break to eat some wonderful cheese-filled pastries and drink some of the famous Colombian coffee.

Understanding Colombians – 45 minutes

We came back from break ready to experience the debut of Cultural Detective Colombia. And what a debut it was! Fernando walked us around the Colombian Values Lens, sharing a story about each value, and explaining how to use it as a strength in working across cultures and making the most of the Free Trade Agreement. He also explained the Negative Perceptions for each value, again with illustrations, and positioning them as skills or competencies to develop when working internationally, at global standards.

Participants, who came in feeling that they had to “change” in order to be successful, now glowed with pride that they already held within them a heritage to be proud of, and onto which they could wisely add cross-cultural competence.

We again asked the participants if the Values Lens provided any further insight into the critical incident, and they found that it did. They enthusiastically declared the accuracy of the Colombian Values Lens. I felt very fortunate to be present for its debut.

This portion took about 45 minutes. While it was not requested by the client, it was an aspect we knew was very important if the participants were to achieve their objectives.

Global Business Ethics – 20 minutes

I am not an ethics professional, but the Cultural Detective Global Business Ethics enabled me to be able to define the topic of ethics in an understandable way. More importantly, I was able to explain the difference between compliant and ethical behavior, and the grey areas created by cultural differences: an action might be “non-compliant” yet seen as the ethical or right thing to do, or an action might be “compliant” but seen as unethical or wrong from a cultural perspective.

With the help of Andrés, our lawyer, we introduced the CD Global Business Ethics Values and Negative Perceptions, using real-life examples. We then asked participants if the values from this ethics lens provided further insight into the Colombia-US negotiation case study. Indeed it did! We also asked them to overlay the Colombia Lens with the Global Business Ethics (GBE) Lens, and the USA Lens with the GBE Lens, and the huge contrasts were apparent. They saw the difference that culture makes on perceptions of right and wrong. Unfortunately we were only able to spend about 30 minutes on this portion.

Personal Values Lenses – 30 minutes

Why such a short time on Global Business Ethics? Because I knew that, if these people were to succeed in global business, they also really needed a grounded understanding of who they were as individuals. Thus, we gave participants about 15 minutes to fill in their own Personal Values Lenses, using an exercise and Lens from Cultural Detective Self Discovery. They could then easily compare their Personal Lens to the Colombian Lens and the USA Lens, as well as the GBE Lens.

In closing, we passed out laminated copies of the 75 or so Lenses in the Cultural Detective series, so participants could get a feel for how they might adapt their approach to a German or an Israeli or South Korean marketplace.

All in all, it was a very fast romp across a very broad territory. But, oh, the insights the participants gained! They left the room in the evening standing tall and looking enthused, which I tend to take as a very good sign.

Fernando and Andrés, thank you so much for this opportunity to work with you both in this way. It is not often I have the pleasure of working with people for the first time and we are able to find such synergy of talents; it was truly a privilege and a joy!

“Interculturalidad” – View on Interculturalism from Latin America

During my recent and incredibly learning- and success-filled trip to Colombia, a client asked me to do a short presentation on the state of intercultural competence in Latin America. Such a small request, right (asked wryly and facetiously)? I live in México, but after four years I sure don’t count myself a culture-specific expert, and I am surely not qualified to speak for over half the hemisphere! So, what to do? Turn to an esteemed colleague’s expertise, of course. In this case, I turned to Adriana Medina (and her co-author, John Sinnigen).

The beauty of the source article I used, “Interculturality vs. Intercultural Competencies in Latin America,” is that the authors introduce facts and history we all know, but they put them into a context in such a way that makes total sense and creates new meaning. At least for me.

For example, one of their points is how Latin Americans have lived interculturality for hundreds of years if not longer: wars, imperialism and commerce between the many distinct indigenous cultures, then conquistadores, colonialism, slavery and intercontinental commerce. Intercultural competence on this stage is not some new import during the current age of global economic interdependence. Rather, Latin America’s gold, silver, emeralds and such were important to European economies beginning centuries ago. The authors’ point is, one of the valuable contributions that Latin American interculturalidad can add to the largely northern and western-originated notions of intercultural communication or intercultural competence is this: power, specifically power imbalances.

The aim is decolonization of institutions and the sociocultural fabric of the country.”

In their article the authors present six strengths that Latin American interculturalidad can contribute to the intercultural communication and competence field. And, speaking for myself, our field is in huge need of hearing and incorporating these perspectives into our theory and practice! Contributions of interculturalidad, according to Medina and Sinnigen,  include that it:
  1. Is counter-hegemonic; focuses on the balance of power
  2. Starts with the needs of marginalized cultures (diverse indigenous movements from Mexico to Bolivia and Ecuador)
  3. Advocates mutual respect and economic and political equality rather than the acculturation of the oppressed
  4. Incorporates Andean/Amazonian concepts such as respect for Pachamama, good living, communitarian practices
  5. Multilingual integration
  6. Decades of dialogue leading to constitutional specificity

I want to thank this client for making this request of me, as it spurred me to learn more about a colleague’s work, and also to learn more about the work of Nestor García Canclini (more about his work in another blog post). I also want to thank Adri and John, whose work, I feel, is very important. I hope this might spur more of us to read, incorporate and build on their findings.

We are very proud to announce that on May 14, 2012, during the international event “Intercultural Competencies for Negotiating under the Free Trade Agreements,” which was held in the Alumni Club of Andes University, we formalized the first export of cross-border services under the new Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and the USA. The export was for international legal and business consulting services and training in intercultural negotiation to develop free trade commerce under article 11 of the FTA.

We trust that this first export will provide Colombians and US Americans intercultural marketing support for long-term business success, and the specialized legal services required to develop commerce between Colombia and the USA. Businesses worldwide will have access to local consulting services in Bogotá, developed under the Cultural Detective brand, generating 15 more jobs in the areas of consulting, interculturalism and international negotiation.
